Powering Progress: Sunflower Electric Economic Development

Sunflower Electric Economic Development is a collaborative initiative of Sunflower and its member cooperatives, driven by a pioneering spirit and a commitment to strengthening Kansas communities and businesses.

A Legacy of Innovation

From the early settlers of the Midwest to the formation of rural electric cooperatives, pioneers have always embraced potential, risk-taking, and perseverance. In the mid-1900s, these qualities helped rural Kansans bring electricity to farms and small towns, transforming their way of life.

Electric cooperatives have long been champions of economic development, investing in infrastructure to provide reliable, affordable power—an essential foundation for thriving businesses, farms, and communities.

Building a Stronger Kansas

In 1957, six western Kansas distribution cooperatives united to create Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, ensuring wholesale power and high-voltage transmission service for rural areas. Today, this cooperative utility network serves more than 259,000 Kansans, delivering reliable electricity through state-of-the-art transmission and distribution systems.
